Fairground Safety

You and Yours is BBC Radio 4's flagship consumer affairs show. I reported on it numerous regularly and from time to time also presented the programme. Here is one such episode, dedicated to British fairground safety. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Friday 27 September 1996 at 12noon.

Iguanas As Pets

Iguanas were the latest craze in pets to go wrong. Pet shops across the UK were selling the cute hand-sized reptiles when young and friend, but failed to explain that soon the creature would be 5 feet long and not so cuddly. I took my life in my hands and visited Vinny The Iguana. First broadcast on Britain Today BBC World Service on 21 September 1996.

Brent Spar Greenpeace

The Brent Spar was a massive oil rig used as a storage tank for oil from the North Sea. It was over 200 miles from Scotland and in the middle of the turbulent waters. At the end of its life, Shell and the British Government wanted to sink it in the North Atlantic. Greenpeace had other ideas and seized the empty structure on 30 April 1995. I was sent by BBC Radio 5 Live to see what was happening.

Branded For Beauty

Branded for beauty or semi-permanent make-up was increasingly popular in the 1990s but sometimes the results were not what the customer ordered. Journeys To The Ice

In 1995, I visited Antarctica to produce and present a 30-minute documentary for BBC Radio 4. It was about two very different journeys to the Ice for tourists and scientists. It was a life-changing trip for all. I met 400 rich and glamorous tourists enjoying champagne and cabaret, and scientists from the British Antarctic Survey undertaking groundbreaking research. Breast Implant Danger

In 1995 The British Journal of Plastic Surgery published a report on the safety of breast implants. I spoke to one of its authors and found out more. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 You and Yours 1995.

Pensioner Poverty

In 1996 many pensioners could not afford to pay their heating bills so used their free bus pass to ride and keep warm. I spoke to one lady forced to leave her home each day to save money on heating. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 You and Yours 1996.

School Advertising

In 1996 a new trend was sweeping education, state schools advertising to attract pupils and parents. I found out more in Birmingham. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Education Matters summer 1996.

Nursery Vetting

At the heart of a safe nursery is police vetting of all staff. In Cambria the local force decided to stop offering the service and some nurseries faced closer as a result. I meet the people involved. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 You and Yours1993.

ASDA FM
