Bleak Playgrounds

Bleak school playgrounds did not make for happy engaged pupils was the findings of a new report about to be published in March 1994. To cover the story, I was sent by BBC Radio 4 You and Yours to visit schools and speak to teachers, pupils and experts. Air Miles 1990s

It seems strange now but Air Miles were once new and mysterious. In the nineties BBC Radio 4's You and Yours sent me off to Birmingham Airport to ask flyers what they knew about these free perks and if they would use them? First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 You and Yours in 1993 at 12 noon.

Partners Identical Twins

Partners was a series I made for The Afternoon Shift on BBC Radio 4. Each episode would tell the story of a partnership between two committed people, each working together to achieve a common goal. In this fourth episode, I met two identical twin dinner ladies who worked together, lived next to each other and even had a double wedding to their chosen husbands. Budget Drink Duty

On budget day the then Chancellor Ken Clark was facing growing pressure to reduce the duty on alcohol to help British pubs in the face of cheap supermarket products and day tripping tourists with bags of duty free. My report was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4's You and Yours.

Red Light Zones

Christians in the midlands have rejected calls for Red Light Tolerance Zones. To find out more, I met the Movement For Christian Democracy at their conference held in Birmingham. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Sunday Programme and introduced by the shows presenter Trevor Barnes.

Reducing Truancy

The traditional school register has recorded pupil attendance for hundreds of years but the red and black pen is now making way for the computer. I went to one midlands school to see if the new system could bring benefits? My report was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Education Matters. 

Hospital Outcomes

At the time one new idea was to improve the outcome of patient care by statically examining results against treatments to find what worked best and when. The Health Minister was Virginia Bottomley MP. My report was broadcast on BBC Radio 4's You and Yours and introduced by presenter Daire Brehan.

Champions 4 Lollipop Lady

Champions was a series I presented and produced on BBC Radio 4 to tell the stories of people who had battled injustice or obstacles to build a better world. There were six 15 minute episodes. In this one Leicester Lollypop Lady Georgina Ford James was a hero in her community as a crime buster. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Saturday 27 April 1996 at 22.45.

Pub Landlords Victory

At the time the pub industry was dominated by big brewing companies who leased their pubs to landlords who paid rent and were tied to the brewery to provide their beers. Often the beer was more expensive than could be obtained on the open market and many pubs went bust. In Sutton Coldfield Martin and Sharon Baylis of The Boot Inn won a victory over their landlord. Here is my report from BBC Radio 4 You and Yours in 1995, introduced by the shows presenter John Howard. 

Pupils Gain Experience
